2015年、合唱指揮者の谷郁（ウィーン・グラーツ留学）と柳嶋耕太（ザール留学）により設立された、東京のプロフェッショナル合唱団。「initium」はラテン語で「はじまり」を意味する。
メンバーはそれぞれソリスト、アンサンブルシンガー、合唱指導者として独自のキャリアをもつ。その高い基礎能力をもとに、時代・地域を問わず、楽曲ごとにふさわしい多声楽演奏のあり方を追求している。編成は16〜40名。
2015年3月、カルロ・ジェズアルドとヴォルフガング・リームの《Tristis est anima mea》、ハンス・アイスラー《Gegen den Krieg》でデビュー。以来、東京で11回の自主単独公演を重ねる。2019年7月、第2回東京国際合唱コンクール室内合唱部門にて第1位金賞を受賞。2022年にはデンマーク人指揮者モルテン・シュルト＝イェンセンを客演指揮者に招聘し、演奏会と指揮マスタークラスを開講。
現代日本人作曲家への委嘱初演にも力を入れており、これまでに成清翠《ささやきュビズム》、真鍋尚之《3つの詩／死》、三宅悠太《寺山修司のテキストによるコンセプションⅠ》などを世に送り出している。2020年にはコロナ禍を契機としてオンライン演奏配信プラットフォーム《initium ; auditorium》を設立した（コロナ禍の収束に合わせてサービス終了）。
《Le vrai visage de la paix──平和のほんとうの顔》《Friede auf Erden ─ trotzdem それでも──地上に平和を》《いのりの深層》。当団のナンバリング公演は、こうしたタイトルを掲げるたびに、ひとつの問いを立ててきた。ルネサンス・ポリフォニーから現代の委嘱作品まで、500年を隔てた声を行き来しながら、その問いへの答えを公演ごとに重ねてきた。
2026年6月の第11回演奏会《いのりの深層》では、柴田南雄《宇宙について》を上演し全席完売。2027年秋には、シュトゥットガルト・シュティフト教会の教会音楽コンサートシリーズ《Stunde der Kirchenmusik》（1958年開始）へ、日本の合唱団として史上初の招聘を受けている。当団体初となる海外公演として、ドイツ各地でのコンサートツアーを計画中。

vocalconsort initium is a Tokyo-based professional vocal ensemble, founded in 2015 by conductors Kaoru Tani (Vienna / Graz) and Kota Yanagishima (Saarbrücken). The Latin word initium means beginning.
Each member brings an independent career as soloist, ensemble singer, or choral coach. Drawing on this collective fluency, the ensemble seeks the form of polyphony each work calls for — across centuries and across cultures. Performing forces range from 16 to 40 voices.
The ensemble made its debut in March 2015 with settings of Tristis est anima mea by Carlo Gesualdo and Wolfgang Rihm, and Hanns Eisler's Gegen den Krieg, and has since presented eleven self-produced concerts in Tokyo. In July 2019 it was awarded the First Prize (Gold) in the chamber choir division of the 2nd Tokyo International Choral Competition. In 2022 the Danish conductor Morten Schuldt-Jensen joined as guest conductor for a concert and a conducting masterclass.
The ensemble actively commissions and premieres new Japanese works, including Midori Narikiyo's Sasayaki-Cubism, Naoyuki Manabe's 3 Poems / Deaths, and Yuta Miyake's Conception I on Texts by Shūji Terayama. In 2020, in response to the pandemic, the ensemble launched the online concert platform initium ; auditorium (discontinued as the pandemic receded).
Le vrai visage de la paix, Friede auf Erden — trotzdem, Inori no Shinsō (The Depths of Prayer): under titles like these, each of our numbered concerts has posed a single question. Moving between Renaissance polyphony and newly commissioned works — voices five centuries apart — the ensemble has built its answer to that question, concert by concert.
At the 11th concert Inori no Shinsō in June 2026, the ensemble staged Minao Shibata's Uchū ni tsuite (On the Cosmos) to a sold-out hall. In autumn 2027 the ensemble has been invited — the first Japanese choir ever to appear — to the Stunde der Kirchenmusik concert series (founded 1958) at the Stiftskirche Stuttgart, and is planning a concert tour across Germany as its first performances abroad.
